
July is my best month for groundbreaking ideas. The idea for “Freelancer Office” came the evening of 7/7/09, an easy enough date to remember. I was walking home from Starbucks, working through some new ideas–I can’t remember the exact train of thought, but it had something to do with brokering office space for freelancers.
When the name came to me, it was a pleasurable eureka moment. I had a feeling the name wasn’t registered yet. After some research, I realized just how well the word “Freelancer” fits me, someone not inclined/confined to one realm of ideas.
I see the “Freelancer Office” rising in prevalence and significance. In the information age, the information worker needs a proper office, where she can focus on her work. Even in the virtual realm we necessarily inhabit physical space. Our physical environment affects our work in innumerable ways.
What is a Freelancer Office? There are more choices, more models than ever, with many more on the way. Metropolitan areas led, and continue to lead the way. But where does this leave the rest of us? In need of an adequate office? This may not seem obvious at first. The information worker may reason: “I’ll work at home and save money, in my pajamas.” But this has consequences.
